What is really hard to gleam from statistics is the nature of students and faculty. I want to go to a medical school where students and faculty are genuinely passionate about caring for patients, and social justice.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1509187841033628660.post-9465244112653657862009-10-11T15:48:51.299-07:002009-10-11T15:48:51.299-07:00I just graduated from a school among those in the ...I just graduated from a school among those in the Primary Care list, and thought there must surely have been a mistake. Over the last three years, the number of graduates from my school choosing primary care has declined steadily. Those of us who did opt for a primary care field, like I did with Family Medicine, chose programs outside of our undergraduate medical institution that actually will allow us to develop our primary care skills rather than participate in a token primary care program. I completely agree with Anthony: these rankings are designed to sell magazines. They've been challenged statistically and in many other ways in the past, and they certainly do not hold up to a "sniff test" either.truce57https://www.blogger.com/profile/15012437254617681121noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1509187841033628660.post-70038588047247417862009-10-03T04:43:32.638-07:002009-10-03T04:43:32.638-07:00As a family medicine resident physician, I am glad...As a family medicine resident physician, I am glad to see this issue addressed.

First, let's be clear - U.S. News does not rank schools to help us produce better health professionals or improve healthcare...they produce rankings to sell their magazine.

Second, until we hold in as high esteem the number of primary care physicians being produced at a given school to the same degree that we currently value the number of neurosugeons or critical care intensivists, our subjective ranking of schools will remain incongruent with the outcomes that actually matter, outcomes that correlate with what is needed to improve health and healthcare in this country.

Anthony Fleg
Native Health Initiative
www.lovingservice.usIHLI Coordinatorshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07540141363283804900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1509187841033628660.post-28568171075919474842009-09-27T19:46:16.995-07:002009-09-27T19:46:16.995-07:00One medical student who responded to research cond...One medical student who responded to research conducted through the Future of Family Medicine report said, "You never read a headline that says, 'Man Treats Hypertension!'" I think that says a lot. First, that more research needs to be done in primary care practices. Second, these are the kinds of things that are important to medical students (and patients).
