After all, tens of thousands of women have been enrolled in RCT's of mammography and many tens of thousands more have been studied in observational research. <br /><br />The fact that people are still debating the matter after this mountain of research suggests one simple conclusion: if mammography does have any benefit it is a very, very small one.<br /><br />I have had patients of mine die of breast cancer and this is a very unpleasant way to leave the world. Mammography has - at best - a very minor role in preventing such deaths. It is a shame that we have been devoting so much resources to this test and not been exploring other avenues to fight breast cancer deaths.
