Wh...Why do drug companies deserve to make a profit? Why do investments need to be recouped? Why can't the research be done in public universities, so the "intellectual property" is held by the public. Drug companies could be contracted to manufacture drugs, but not have a stranglehold of ownership on the knowledge. Commercial, profit-driven research has come up with appallingly little new knowledge, and in the meantime, companies are not producing effective but unprofitable drugs, leading to shortages. Of all the forms of private property that hurt us, intellectual property is high on the list.
